Powertrain and Driveline

Mercedes-Benz Actros 1845 is powered by the OM 471, a 12.8L inline-6 engine producing 330 kW (449 hp) and 2,200 Nm at 1,100 rpm. The X-Pulse common-rail system delivers up to 2,700 bar injection pressure, supporting efficient combustion at low engine speeds. Third-generation variants feature "Top Torque," which selectively adds 200 Nm in higher gears for extra pulling power without increasing base fuel consumption. The engine is paired with the 12-speed PowerShift 3 automated manual gearbox, offering adaptive shifting programs such as “Economy” and “Power,” and complemented by Predictive Powertrain Control (PPC) – a GPS-guided system that anticipates topography, optimizing gear selection and EcoRoll for up to 5% fuel savings. Fast axle ratios (as low as i=2.533) are available for reduced highway RPM.

Cab Design and Options

Cab choices include StreamSpace (up to 1.97 m headroom), BigSpace (1.99 m), and GigaSpace (2.13 m), all with flat floors and 2.5 m wide configurations for maximum comfort and storage. StreamSpace is available in 2.3 m or 2.5 m widths, with optional flat floor. GigaSpace is targeted at international long-haul and double-crew operations. Premium options such as improved insulation, larger bunks, and upgraded mattresses are standard on Actros L variants.

Digital Systems and Driver Assistance

Later Actros 1845 models replace conventional mirrors with MirrorCam, using twin external cameras and 15” A-pillar displays to reduce drag (1.3% fuel savings), enhance visibility in adverse conditions, and provide auto-panning for trailer tracking. The Multimedia Cockpit features two digital screens—instrument cluster and central touch interface—controlled via steering wheel touchpads, supporting Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. Key assistance systems include ABA 5 (full emergency braking with pedestrian detection), ADA (Level 2 semi-automation), Lane Keeping Assist, Proximity Control Assist, and Sideguard Assist. Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go function is standard in many variants.

Efficiency and Market Position

Real-world operator data and comparative “Fuel Duel” results demonstrate consistent fuel advantage over competitors, with typical consumption in the 23–26 l/100 km range. The Actros 1845’s suite of integrated technologies targets reduced TCO, high operational uptime, and superior driver comfort, positioning it as a technological benchmark among 450 hp European long-haul tractors.
