Powertrain and Drivetrain Variants

The Mercedes-Benz Actros 1848 is specified for a maximum GVW of 18 tonnes with a power output segment targeting approximately 480 hp. Early MP3 (2010–2012) units feature the OM 501 LA 11.95L V6 engine delivering 350 kW/476 hp and 2300 Nm, utilizing PLD unit-injector technology and BlueTec SCR. The MP4 (2011–2018) and MP5 (2018–2024) transition to the OM 471 12.8L inline-6 engine (350 kW/476 hp, 2300 Nm), introducing X-Pulse amplified common rail fuel injection with max pressures up to 2,700 bar. The 3rd generation OM 471 (from 2022) offers new turbochargers—one optimized for fuel economy and another for engine braking—plus a higher 20.3:1 compression ratio, achieving up to 4% improved fuel efficiency.

Transmission and Control Systems

MP3 models provide a choice between a 12-speed PowerShift 2 AMT or an optional 16-speed synchromesh manual. MP4 introduces PowerShift 3 as standard, offering advanced shift logic and integrated driving modes. MP5 upgrades to PowerShift Advanced with refined low-speed handling and dynamic start-off. Predictive Powertrain Control (PPC) is available from MP4, using map-based topographical data and GPS for proactive gear selection and EcoRoll fuel-saving functions. Drivetrains are engineered for increased reliability and low TCO.

Cabin Evolution and Digitalization

Cab options include the 2,300 mm and 2,500 mm wide StreamSpace, BigSpace, and GigaSpace configurations. MP4 introduced the industry’s first fully flat floor in 2,500 mm cabs, eliminating the engine tunnel for maximum interior mobility. MP5 refines comfort with MirrorCam digital mirror system (eliminating physical mirrors for lower drag and improved visibility) and Multimedia Cockpit with up to two touch-operated 12” digital screens, extensive app connectivity, and ergonomic multi-function steering wheel.

Advanced Safety and Assistance Systems

MP4 units feature ABA 3 with autonomous emergency braking, Lane Keeping Assist, and Attention Assist. MP5 advances to ABA 5 with pedestrian detection and full-stop capability, Active Sideguard Assist with autonomous intervention, and Active Drive Assist for SAE Level 2 semi-automated driving. These systems leverage radar, camera, and digital sensing for proactive accident prevention and reduced driver workload.
