Powertrain and Performance

The Mercedes-Benz Actros 2542 (2010–2024) is defined by a consistent 310 kW (421 hp) output, first delivered by the 12L OM 501 LA V6 in MP3 (2010–2012) models, transitioning to the 12.8L OM 471 inline-6 for MP4 (2011–2018) and MP5 (2018–2024) generations. Peak torque is 2100 Nm from 1100 rpm, enabling strong low-end performance. The OM 471 engine series underwent three evolution stages, each increasing fuel efficiency and introducing higher injection pressures, improved compression ratios, and advanced turbocharger designs. The standard transmission from MP4 onwards is the 12-speed PowerShift 3, integrating selectable “Economy” and “Power” modes, with later PowerShift Advanced versions offering 40% quicker upper-gear shift times. Predictive Powertrain Control (PPC), using GPS and 3D mapping, actively manages gear changes and speed, reducing fuel consumption on varied terrain.

Chassis, Axles, and Weight Configuration

The Actros 2542 is typically built as a 6x2 configuration, supporting a GVW between 25,000 and 26,500 kg. Front axle capacity is up to 8,000 kg, drive axle up to 13,000 kg, and tag/pusher axles rated at 7,500 kg. Air suspension on rear (and often front) axles ensures cargo protection and ride comfort, with liftable/steerable third axles common for variable payloads. Wheelbases vary from 4000 mm (tractors) to above 6000 mm (rigid models). Payload depends on body and options, commonly ranging from 14,000 to 17,800 kg.

Cab Variants and Cockpit Systems

Cab options include GigaSpace (flat floor, 2.13 m interior height), BigSpace (1.99 m), and StreamSpace (1.97 m/2.5 m width flat floor, or 2.3 m with optional tunnel). MP5 models feature the standard Multimedia Cockpit: two color digital displays, touch controls, and optional 12-inch screens, with app connectivity. The MP5 also swaps mirrors for MirrorCam, enhancing visibility and aerodynamics. Classic controls remain available in the Actros F variant.

Integrated Safety and Assistance Systems

MP4 and MP5 generations include evolving ADA, Lane Keeping Assist, Stability Control Assist, and Proximity Control Assist. MP5 introduces Active Drive Assist (Level 2 automation) and Active Sideguard Assist. Active Brake Assist (ABA) advances from stationary obstacle detection in early models to full emergency braking for moving pedestrians in ABA 5. The system suite’s integration leverages camera and radar networks that inform both safety interventions and PPC fuel strategies.
