This configuration omits DPF, relying solely on SCR (BlueTec 5), enabling robust operation on variable fuel quality and reduced urban regeneration issues. From 2013, the Atego 1326 adopts the OM936 7.7L inline-six, moving to common rail injection (2,400 bar), variable camshaft phasing, and integrated exhaust after-treatment (DOC, DPF, SCR, ASC). This increases torque delivery, lowers NVH, and reduces both fuel and DEF consumption due to combined EGR/SCR strategy.
Transmission and Driveline Specifics
Euro 5 Atego 1326 units use the Telligent AMT (G85-6), operated via armrest joystick and semi-automated or fully automated clutch actuation. From Euro 6, PowerShift 3 AMT becomes standard, offering integrated GPS-based shift optimization, EcoRoll coast mode, and crawl function for precision docking. Off-road and fire service variants (1326 AF) feature planetary hub-reduction axles, VG transfer cases with selectable low range, and up to three mechanical diff locks. The drivetrain supports permanent AWD, critical for overland and specialist applications.
Chassis, Suspension, and Payload Adaptability
Atego 1326 chassis employs a 50mm perforated ladder frame for modular body mounting and anti-corrosion integrity. Wheelbase combinations are extensive, supporting diverse applications from distribution to expedition builds. Standard suspension is steel parabolic springs, with 2-bag ECAS air suspension at the rear on most distribution units, and full air suspension as a premium or specialist option. The platform allows for a ~6–7t payload in the 13t GVW class. Expedition and 4x4 chassis benefit from torsion-optimised subframe mounting for off-road durability.
Cabin Ergonomics and Safety Features
Cab variants include S-Cab, S-Cab Extended, L-Cab (ClassicSpace), and rare L-Cab BigSpace with standing height. Euro 6 interiors standardize multifunction steering wheels, TFT displays, and column-mounted gear selectors, eliminating cab obstructions. Safety systems in Euro 6 include ESP, Active Brake Assist, and Lane Keeping Assist. Fleet connectivity is enhanced by Mercedes-Benz Uptime and comprehensive CAN-based diagnostics.
