Cab and Chassis Design

The Mercedes-Benz Econic 2630 is defined by its low-entry DirectVision cab, featuring panoramic glazing and a fully glazed, inward-opening passenger door for maximum VRU visibility and safe curbside egress. The ergonomic low-entry concept, together with full air suspension offering +200 mm/-60 mm adjustment, minimizes crew fatigue during frequent stop cycles. The aluminum space frame complies with ECE-R29/02 crash standards. The chassis provides a standardized 50 mm hole grid and removable rear cross member, with available wheelbases from 3,450 to 4,800 mm supporting tight turning circles (14.8–19.1 m) and facilitating body integration. Key variants include 6x2/4 ENA (rear-steer tag axle for maneuverability) and 6x4 (twin-drive) layouts.

Powertrain Options

The Econic 2630 offers three main powertrains. The OM 936 LA 7.7L inline-six turbo diesel delivers 220 kW (299 hp)/1,200 Nm or optionally 260 kW (354 hp)/1,400 Nm, paired with an Allison 3000P 6-speed automatic or optional PowerShift 3 12-speed AMT. The NGT variant uses the M936G mono-fuel CNG engine (222 kW/1,200 Nm), providing up to 20% lower CO₂ emissions and silent operation with a three-way catalyst—no SCR or AdBlue required. The eEconic features a dual-motor eAxle (continuous 330 kW, peak 400 kW), 336 kWh battery (3 packs), up to 150 km range, and supports DC charging at 160 kW (20–80% in ~75 min).

Safety and Assistance Systems

City-specific safety systems include ABA 6 with radar-camera fusion for VRU detection and autonomous braking up to 60 km/h, Sideguard Assist 2, Front Guard Assist, and Lane Keeping Assist. EBS with ABS, ASR, disc brakes, electronic parking brake with HOLD, and an advanced electronic architecture are standard. The 2630 consistently earns the 5-star DVS rating for direct vision, exceeding critical safety mandates for urban applications.

Operational Versatility

A bodybuilder-friendly design supports mounting of refuse compactors, fire/rescue apparatus, airport ground support, and customized solutions via Mercedes-Benz CTT. The cab is available in standard and low heights for clearance-critical sectors. Payload and operational flexibility are enhanced by reduced CNG model weight penalties and air suspension protection features.
