Powertrain and Driveline

The Renault T520 is powered by the DTI 13, a 12.8L inline-six diesel engine delivering 520 hp and 2550 Nm of torque over a broad rev range (1000–1430 rpm). Key technology includes high-pressure common-rail injection, overhead camshaft, and 24 valves. Later models implement wave pistons, new injectors, and reduced parasitic losses for incremental fuel efficiency gains. The DTI 13 pairs with the 12-speed Optidriver AMT (AT 2612F), optimized through advanced control software. Optivision Map Based cruise control leverages GPS and topographical data for predictive gear selection, while ECO Cruise Control with Optiroll enables coasting on descents. The Optibrake+ retarder is standard, utilizing exhaust and compression release braking for improved downhill control.

Chassis and Configurations

The T520’s modular high-tensile steel chassis supports a range of wheelbases (3700–4100 mm) and several axle layouts. Popular configurations include 4x2 (GVW 18–19 t), 6x2 pusher and tag (GVW 26 t), and 6x4 with double-drive bogie for high-traction or off-road requirements. GCW is typically rated at 44 t for standard European operations. Front axle load ratings are 7.5 or 8 t depending on spec. Lightweight aluminum gearbox casing aids payload optimization. Optional camera-based mirrors and A+ low-rolling-resistance tires (MY25) support increased operational efficiency.

Cab Options and Driver Environment

T520 cabs range from Sleeper to High Sleeper, with the flagship T High offering a full flat floor and over 2 m standing height. The 2021 Evolution facelift introduced a three-axis adjustable steering column, push-button start, 12-inch HD digital dashboard, ergonomic seating with heating/ventilation, and an upgraded “Serenity” bunk. The Maxispace package reconfigures interior space for maximal living comfort, adding folding tables, additional storage, and premium trim. Cab aerodynamics benefit from a trapezoidal profile and integrated deflectors, headlights, and fairings.

Special Variants and Packages

The T High “1894 Edition” (limited to 125 units) features unique midnight blue/golden styling and Recaro® seats, while the Smart Racer spec optimizes for minimal fuel consumption through the inclusion of the DE13 Turbo Compound engine, full Fuel Eco software suite, and aerodynamic enhancements, achieving up to 14% lower fuel use vs standard models. MY25 upgrades include camera-based mirrors, adaptive power steering with real-time adjustment, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high-beam lighting.
