Powertrain and Efficiency
The Scania G450 is powered by a 12.7L DC13 inline-six, producing 450 hp and 2,350 Nm of torque after adopting SCR-only emissions control from 2014 onward. The SCR-only DC13 147 engine dispenses with EGR and VGT, resulting in reduced mechanical complexity and lower maintenance. Fuel efficiency is enhanced by up to 1% over earlier EGR/SCR systems, with AdBlue consumption around 6-7% of fuel usage. The latest Super-generation engine, introduced in 2021, achieves 50% brake thermal efficiency, employing DOHC, a single-piece cylinder head, and a built-in Compression Release Brake (CRB) providing 350 kW of retarding power. Twin-Dosing SCR ensures compliance with Euro 6E across varying duty cycles.
Transmission and Driveline
The G450 Super models pair with the G33CM Opticruise AMT, featuring an aluminum case, dry sump lubrication, and reduced internal friction. A planetary reverse gear design delivers up to eight reverse ratios, and a true overdrive (0.77:1) allows cruising at 900 rpm under highway loads. The XT variant offers hub reduction axles and multi-leaf parabolic springs for severe-duty applications. "Clutch on Demand" permits manual clutch actuation during low-speed maneuvering in automated trucks, increasing control when operating in challenging terrain.
Cab Configurations and Safety
The G-series cab range includes short (CG14), medium (CG17), standard sleeper (CG20), and Highline (CG20H) variants. Highline configurations increase internal height significantly, supporting comfort for long-haul crews while retaining a 325 mm engine tunnel for auxiliary equipment, especially on XT construction models. The NTG cab uses high-tensile steel, and G450 is available with rollover side curtain airbags. A-pillars and dashboard are specifically redesigned for minimized blind spots and improved field of vision.
Operational Technology
Scania’s Opticruise system incorporates a lay-shaft brake for rapid shifting while maintaining turbo boost, and adaptive Cruise Control with Active Prediction (CCAP) utilizes GPS mapping to optimize speed and gear shifts over varied topography, yielding additional fuel savings. Advanced driver assistance features, such as AEB and LDW, are available in all G450 configurations.
