Scania G480 at Engeros Otepää
Powertrain and Transmission
The Scania G480 features the DC13 12.7L inline-six diesel engine, developing 480 hp at 1900 rpm and peak torque of 2400–2500 Nm from 1000–1350 rpm. Multiple generations are present, including Euro 5 (primarily SCR) and Euro 6 variants with both EGR and SCR, plus a Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) for improved low-speed torque. The engine is paired with Scania Opticruise AMT, available in 12- or 14-speed (crawler) configurations. Later Opticruise units include Active Prediction, integrating GPS and topographical data for optimized shifting and fuel use. The latest G25 and G33 AMTs utilize aluminum casings, wider ratio spreads, and reduced friction, supporting efficient cruising at rpm as low as 850.
Cab Options and Ergonomics
The modular G-series cab line includes Short Cab, Day Cab (low/normal roof), and Sleeper Cab (Normal/Highline). The Highline offers interior height up to 3610mm and bunks up to 1000mm wide. All Next Generation cabs offer enhanced visibility via slimmer A-pillars, larger glass areas, and driver-forward positioning. Ergonomic seating, smart storage accessible from both inside and outside, and a re-engineered dashboard with a large digital display support driver comfort.
Chassis Configurations and Suspension
The G480 platform supports a wide array of configurations: 6x2 tractors with liftable mid/pusher axles, 6x4 tandem drive units for heavy haulage, and 8x4 rigids with twin-steer and tandem rear bogie (GVW up to 32,500 kg). Customization extends to frame strengths (e.g., F950: 270x90x9.5mm), parabolic leaf or multi-bag air suspension, tag axle setups, and diverse rear axle ratios, enabling precise matching to operational needs.
Distinctive Features
Key G480 advantages include the Scania Retarder auxiliary brake, adaptive Opticruise transmission, modular cab and chassis selection, and advanced driver support systems such as ACC, LDW, and AEB. The drivetrain’s low-rev, high-torque focus ensures strong startability and hill performance, while cab ergonomics and digital controls contribute to a premium driver experience.
