Used Scania P270 Specifications Overview

Chassis and Modular Architecture

The Scania P270 leverages the Scania Modular System, utilizing a robust, high-tensile steel F950 frame (U-channel, 270 x 90 x 9.5 mm) with a standardized 50 mm hole grid for rapid and secure body mounting. This structural approach supports multiple axle configurations—4x2, 6x2, 6x4—permitting applications up to 26 tonnes GVW. Front axle load ratings reach 7,500 kg, supported by parabolic leaf springs, while the rear typically employs air suspension with Electronic Level Control (ELC) for precise ride height adjustment and automatic load compensation. Numerically higher final drive ratios (3.08:1, 3.42:1) enhance low-speed performance for intensive urban or municipal roles.

Powertrain: 5-Cylinder DC9 Series

The P270 is defined by its inline 5-cylinder, 8.9L DC9 engine family, notable for its compactness and weight (approx. 950–990 kg dry). Diesel variants (DC9 17, DC9 20) deliver 270 hp and 1,250 Nm across 1,100–1,450 rpm, employing PDE unit injectors at up to 2,050 bar and fixed-geometry turbocharging. Twin balance shafts mitigate vibration, ensuring smooth operation despite the unorthodox cylinder count. The alternative DC9 E02 ethanol engine, running on ED95, achieves similar power and 1,200 Nm torque, utilizing a 28:1 compression ratio, reinforced internals, and specialized injectors, aligning with EEV standards for ultra-low emissions.

Transmission and Axles

P270 models are available with Scania Opticruise automated manual (three- or two-pedal) or manual GR875 (8-speed) and GRS895 (12-speed) transmissions, tailored for distribution duty and precise low-speed maneuvering. Rear axles (R660/R780 single reduction) are optimized for urban stop-start cycles and allow high driveline efficiency. The modularity permits adaptation for a wide array of specialized bodywork and applications.

Cab and Ergonomics

The low-entry P-series cab distinguishes the P270, minimizing entry height for frequent ingress/egress. Cabin options include CP14 (short), CP16 (day), and CP19 (sleeper, multiple roof heights). A prominent engine tunnel (approx. 440 mm) is a trade-off for low overall cab profile. Facelifted models (post-2011) incorporate improved aerodynamics, larger grilles, and optimized airflow for enhanced driver visibility and cooling capacity, supporting intensive city and regional use.
