Powertrain Options and Performance
The Scania P280 is available with two distinct engine families: the 9-litre, 5-cylinder DC09 and the lighter 6.7-litre, 6-cylinder DC07. The DC09 develops 280 hp at 1900 rpm and delivers 1400 Nm from 1000–1400 rpm, optimized for high-torque applications. The newer DC07 produces the same 280 hp but 1200 Nm between 1050–1600 rpm, with a weight reduction of up to 360 kg, favoring payload-sensitive urban work. Gearbox options include robust 8-speed manuals and Opticruise AMTs, with the latest G25/G33 Opticruise units offering advanced layshaft braking, multiple driving modes, and up to eight reverse gears for specialist applications.
Chassis, Axle, and Specialist Configurations
P280 variants span 4x2 and 6x2 layouts, with hub reduction axles available for GCW up to 80 tonnes. The range extends to the P280 XT 4x4, with full AWD, dual-range transfer case, and inter-axle diff locks, targeting construction and off-road sectors. All models share EBS disc brakes derived from Scania’s heavier-duty trucks, providing robust stopping power and margin of safety, particularly where auxiliary exhaust brake retarding is modest (88 kW on DC07).
Cabin Choices and Ergonomics
Operators can specify P-Short, P-Day (Low/Normal), P-Sleeper (Low/Normal/Highline), or CrewCab configurations. NTG models benefit from a lower engine tunnel (by 95 mm with DC07), enhanced direct vision via slimmer A-pillars and a lowered dashboard, and low-step access for urban multi-drop routes. Interior upgrades include advanced digital instrument displays and improved sound insulation, supporting Scania’s focus on class-leading driver ergonomics.
Safety and Assistive Technologies
NTG P280 units incorporate a steel-reinforced cab structure, standard ADAS (AEB, LDW, ESP), and available rollover side curtain airbags. Options such as the City Safe Window and 360° camera system bolster direct vision and maneuverability in congested environments, setting a high standard in mid-segment safety and situational awareness.
