Notably lighter than typical 6-cylinder units, the DC09 employs twin balance shafts to minimize vibration—essential in the low-mounted P-series cab. Post-2017 Euro 6 versions feature SCR-only aftertreatment, increasing reliability and reducing maintenance by eliminating EGR. A fixed geometry turbocharger (FGT) is fitted as standard, optimizing durability in stop-start urban cycles. A rare alternative is the DC13 13L inline-6, preferred for select heavy-duty applications due to increased engine braking but penalized by an extra 100 kg dry mass.

Opticruise automated gearboxes are standard, initially with 8- or 12-speed configurations.
