Used Scania P400 Specifications Overview
Cab Design and Configurations
Scania P400 utilizes the low-entry P-series cab, available in CP16 and CP19 Highline variants. These cabs are optimized for frequent ingress and egress, with two or three-step access, reducing driver fatigue in multi-drop or construction duties. The CP19 Highline offers increased vertical space, making the P400 suitable as a compact regional sleeper. Direct vision is prioritized through a lower seating position, enhancing pedestrian and cyclist visibility in urban settings.
Chassis and Suspension Architecture
The P400 is built on the F950 steel ladder frame, with standard rail dimensions of 270 x 90 x 9.5 mm, engineered for high torsional loads from the 13-liter DC13 engine. Common axle configurations include 6x4 and 8x4 for tippers or mixers, and 6x2 for distribution, often with lift or steer axles. Suspension setups differ by spec: parabolic steel leaf springs (2x32 or 3x29 leaves) on construction models and two- or four-bag air suspension for highway applications, providing adaptability for varying operational demands.
Powertrain and Emissions Systems
The DC13 05 engine delivers 400 hp (294 kW) at 1,900 rpm and 2,100 Nm torque at 1,000–1,300 rpm. Earlier versions feature PDE unit injectors for fuel flexibility; later units employ XPI common rail injection for superior emissions control. Most P400 units utilize SCR-only emissions architecture, enabling consistent performance and lower fuel consumption while avoiding the complexity of EGR systems. The P400's robust torque curve is advantageous in heavy urban/construction cycles, supporting high-payload efficiency.
Transmission, Retarder, and Operational Features
The model is paired with the GRS905 (or GRSO905R) 14-speed Opticruise AMT, available in fully automated or three-pedal variants to suit both highway and off-road duties. Integrated hydrodynamic retarder (up to 4,100 Nm) extends service brake life in demanding applications. Real-world fuel consumption for regional and distribution work is 25–28 l/100 km. Maintenance intervals reach up to 60,000 km for long-haul, with frequent service recommended for construction use. Common operational concerns include NOx sensor sensitivity and urban AdBlue crystallization, with robust secondary market status for SCR-only models.
