The Scania P420 is distinguished by its adaptable yet technically advanced powertrain across three generations. Early models (2010–2013) featured the DC12 11.7L inline-6 engine with 420 hp (309 kW) and 2,100 Nm, using an SCR-only emissions system. From 2013, the P420 transitioned to the 12.7L DC13, officially rated at 410 hp (306 kW) and 2,150 Nm. The latest NTG models (2021–present) employ the DC13 176 "Super" engine, producing 420 hp (309 kW) at 1,800 rpm and a broad 2,300 Nm torque plateau from 900–1,290 rpm, paired with a Twin-SCR aftertreatment system. Transmission options emphasize the Opticruise AMT, fully automated from 2009, with next-gen G25CM1/G33CM1 gearboxes offering faster shifts, multi-mode operation, lightweight construction (up to 75 kg less), and up to eight reverse gears. Most variants feature the hydraulic Scania Retarder for robust secondary braking.

Chassis, Suspension, and Configurations

P420 models are available in 4x2, 6x2, 6x4, 8x2, and 8x4 layouts, maximizing versatility for distribution, construction, and specialist roles. Parabolic leaf suspension is standard for heavy-duty and XT applications, while full air suspension is widely specified for tractor units and rigids prioritizing ride comfort and cargo stability. Liftable and steerable tag/pusher axles are frequently integrated for reduced tire wear and optimal maneuverability. GVW ratings reach up to 41 tonnes in heavy-duty configurations.

Cab and Interior Variants

The P-series cab, with its low-forward mounting for easy access and visibility, is available as Short, Day, or Sleeper (CP14/CP17/CP19/CP20), with Low, Normal, and Highline roofs. The NTG generation adds improved A-pillar slenderness, a lowered dashboard, and optional City Safe Window for enhanced urban safety. Interior upgrades include an Isri driver’s seat, advanced digital displays, and up to 7-inch infotainment touchscreen. The XT option offers additional exterior reinforcement, a high-tensile front bumper, protected lighting, and a 40-tonne tow pin.
