Used Scania R480 Specifications Overview

Engine and Powertrain

The Scania R480 features the 13-litre DC13 inline-six engine, delivering 480 hp and engineered for low-rev cruising. Early models (2010–2012) were available with either PDE unit injectors (Euro 5) or XPI common-rail injection (up to 2,400 bar) supporting multi-stage injection for improved efficiency. Euro 5 models included a choice between EGR-only or SCR emission management, with EGR versions eliminating the need for AdBlue. Later Euro 6 variants adopted XPI injection exclusively, VGT turbocharging, DPF, and compact SCR systems without altering chassis dimensions.

Transmission, Braking, and Driveline

The standard transmission for the R480 is the GRS905 14-speed range-splitter, automated via the Opticruise AMT system. Opticruise offers multiple driving modes: Standard, Economy, Power, and Off-road. The R4100D hydraulic retarder (up to 4,100 Nm) is integrated, with Streamline-era versions featuring a disengaging function to further reduce fuel consumption. Rear axles use the R780 single-reduction differential, optimized for low engine speeds (80 km/h at 850–1,000 rpm). Full air suspension and adjustable chassis height configurations are available.

Cabin and Ergonomics

The R480 offers multiple high-roof sleeper cabs, with interior configurations focused on driver comfort. Features include beds adjustable between 700–900 mm width, large storage options, upgraded Recaro seating (Streamline onward), and a driver-centric dashboard. Next Generation models introduce enhanced visibility, ergonomic layout, and integrated digital displays with live feedback from Scania Driver Support.

Advanced Technology and Fuel Adaptability

Streamline models introduced aerodynamic enhancements and Scania Active Prediction (GPS-based cruise), achieving up to 8% fuel savings over previous versions. From 2011, all R480s integrate telematics via Scania Communicator, enabling fleet monitoring and flexible maintenance scheduling. The DC13 engine supports both HVO and B100 biodiesel without modifications, positioning the R480 for reduced CO2 operation across diverse regulations and markets.
