Scania R490 at Engeros Otepää

Powertrain and Transmission

The Scania R490 is powered by the DC13 125, a 12.7-litre inline-six engine delivering 490 hp and 2,550 Nm at 1,000–1,300 rpm. The engine employs both EGR and SCR for robust NOx management across varied duty cycles. Transmission is managed by the Scania Opticruise AMT, with 2-pedal systems standard after 2014. Key options include Active Prediction, a GPS-based cruise control adjusting gear strategy for upcoming terrain, and later G25/G33 Opticruise units with 14-gear ratios, super-crawler gear, aluminium housings, and reduced drivetrain friction for further fuel savings. Rear axle options include fast-ratio R756, designed for fuel-efficient low-rev cruising.

Chassis Configurations and Running Gear

Available primarily as 4x2 and 6x2 tractor units, the R490 supports GCW up to 44,000 kg. 6x2 variants often feature liftable axles to improve efficiency and reduce tyre wear. Suspension setups vary from parabolic/air (standard) to full air suspension, enabling ride height adjustments. All models utilize EBS-managed disc brakes with ABS. The modular architecture allows adaptation for different weights and applications.

Cab Options and Driver Technologies

Highline and Topline sleeper cabs distinguish the R490, with Topline providing maximum headroom and storage for extended international routes. The Next Generation platform introduced in 2016 further optimized cab aerodynamics, digital displays, and driver ergonomics. Advanced features include Scania Driver Support (real-time feedback), modular infotainment, and optional ADAS such as AEB and Driver Attention Support. Cab interiors feature extendable beds, under-bunk refrigeration, and configurable digital dashboards depending on model year and trim.

Efficiency and Reliability

The R490’s fuel economy is driven by integrated aerodynamics (Streamline models), low-rev torque delivery, and predictive shifting. Long-term durability stems from a robust chassis and powertrain, though electronic and aftertreatment reliability depends on maintenance of NOx and AdBlue systems. Routine issues include emissions-related sensor faults and minor cabin electronics. The R490 is widely recognized as a durable, high-performing long-haul solution within the Scania lineup.
