Used Scania R500 Specifications Overview
Powertrain Evolution: V8 to Inline-6
The Scania R500 encompasses two distinct eras: 2010–2017 models feature the DC16 15.6L V8 engine at 500 hp (368 kW) with 2500 Nm torque (1000–1350 rpm), renowned for its robust low-end torque and exclusive SCR-only aftertreatment. The second-generation R500 (2017–2024) adopts the DC13 12.7L inline-6, delivering 500 hp (373 kW) and up to 2650 Nm torque (Super version), utilizing a lighter architecture and Twin SCR for improved efficiency and emissions control. The Super powertrain, introduced 2021, offers DOHC and an optional CRB with up to 350 kW braking, supported by advanced integration with the new G33CM Opticruise gearbox.
Chassis, Cab Configurations, and Modularity
The R500’s modular chassis system facilitates a broad spectrum of customizable configurations: axle layouts from 4x2 to 8x4, with options for steerable and lift axles. Cab variants include Normal and Highline sleepers; the NGS Highline model features 2.07 m standing height. Both generations provide extensive storage, wide lower bunks up to 1000 mm, and enhancements such as integrated refrigerators. The NGS redesigned cab, developed with Porsche Engineering, features a relocated driver position, digital instrumentation, and improved visibility.
Transmission and Drivetrain Technologies
All R500s employ the Scania Opticruise AMT, with the transition to fully automatic two-pedal operation post-2010. The NGS-era G33CM and G25CM gearboxes offer a lightweight aluminium housing, wider gear spreads, and true overdrive. Features include Active Prediction, coupling GPS-based topographical data with cruise control, and selectable Eco-roll modes, optimizing fuel use under varying terrain.
Advanced Systems and Safety
Later R500s are equipped with integrated ADAS: AEB, LDW, ACC with Active Prediction, and side curtain rollover airbags. The platform supports new GSR-mandated tech such as Smart Dash, BSIS, MOIS, and ISA. The Scania Retarder is optional for auxiliary braking, and electronic chassis management (ESP, EBS) comes standard throughout. These systems underscore the R500’s dual legacy of power and efficiency, while continually advancing safety and operational intelligence.
