V8 Powertrain and Engine Options

The Scania R520 features the DC16 16.4L V8, producing 520 hp at 1900 rpm and 2700 Nm between 1000–1300 rpm. Both PGR (2010–2017) and NTG (2016–2024) generations use this engine, supporting heavy-duty applications and sustained high torque at low revs. The DC16 evolved to accommodate Euro 5 and later Euro 6 compliance, with NTG variants offering the Twin-SCR system for optimized AdBlue dosing. All recent engines are approved for 100% HVO and biodiesel use. Drivetrains include GRS905 (12+2 speed) or the latest G25/G33 Opticruise automated transmissions in the NTG, with refined gear ratio spread and multi-ratio reverse functionality.

Cab Configurations and Aerodynamics

PGR series R520s are available with Highline and Topline cabs, offering up to 2220 mm internal height and focused on long-haul comfort. The Streamline aerodynamic package, launched in 2013, enhances airflow with revised rooflines, sun visors, and corner panels. NTG models introduce a redesigned, aerodynamic R-series cab, with significant drag reduction from optimized surfaces, tighter panel tolerances, and integrated lighting for fuel economy gains. Available axle formulas include 4x2, 6x2, 6x4, and 8x4, supporting a range of heavy-haul roles.

Integrated Technology and Driver Environment

The NTG R520 introduces an advanced modular digital cockpit, extended infotainment with large touchscreens, and ergonomic dash design centered around the optimal driving position. Features include extendable 1000 mm beds, noise insulation, improved visibility, and customizable storage. Integrated EMS, GCU, and ADAS (incl. Active Prediction GPS-based cruise) enable predictive gear control and eco-roll strategies for improved operational efficiency. Scania Fleet Management connectivity is native for remote diagnostics and performance monitoring.

Customization and Ownership Value

PGR R520s are highly regarded for mechanical simplicity and vast aftermarket customization options. Both PGR and NTG models sustain high reliability and residuals, with owner-operator appeal for prestige and individualization. NTG generation emphasizes lower running costs via reduced internal drivetrain losses, aerodynamic gains, and extended service intervals, making R520 suitable for demanding fleet contracts or specialized heavy transport.
