V8 Powertrain and Transmission
The Scania R580 is powered by the DC16 V8 engine, offered in two key versions during 2010–2024. Early PGR models (2010–2016) have a 15.6L V8 with PDE unit injector, producing 580 hp at 1,900 rpm and 2,700 Nm between 1,100–1,300 rpm. Next Generation (NTG, 2017–2020) models feature a 16.4L V8 with XPI common-rail injection, maintaining 580 hp but delivering 3,000 Nm in a broader 950–1,300 rpm band. NTG units utilize SCR-only aftertreatment on most configurations. The R580 comes exclusively with Scania’s Opticruise AMT (12 or 14-speed, depending on generation), paired with a hydraulic retarder (up to 4,700 Nm) for enhanced auxiliary braking. Options include hub-reduction or single-reduction rear axles.
Cabin, Chassis, and Configurations
Cab variants primarily include Highline (1,900 mm interior height) and Topline (2,200 mm), both featuring wide bunks up to 1,000 mm in select specs. NTG models moved the driver’s position forward and outward for improved visibility, and offer a 7" infotainment system and digital instrument cluster. Axle layouts commonly comprise 6x2 with lift/tag axles or 6x4 with dual driven rear axles. Suspension options include full air (B-type) or parabolic/air combinations (A-type), tailored for heavy haulage or long-haul comfort, with air- or leaf-sprung axles selectable by application.
Limited Editions and Advanced Features
Special editions such as the 2014 Blue Stream (200 units, metallic blue, all major factory packs, ventilated leather, advanced lighting, ACC) and the 2018 Red Passion (75 units, full air suspension, kitchen pack, 360° cameras, Durabrite alloys) highlight exclusive detailing and high equipment levels. NTG models integrate ADAS including ACC, AEB, ESP, and LDW; premium amenities like integrated refrigerator, full kitchen pack, and advanced driver interface are available on upper trims.
