V8 Powertrain and Performance
The Scania R620 is powered by the DC16 V8 engine, producing 620 hp and 3,000 Nm of torque—delivered from just 950 rpm up to 1,400 rpm. Early PGR-era models (2010–2013) feature a 15.6L V8 with PDE unit injectors and SCR after-treatment. From 2013, a 16.4L CGI-block V8 was adopted, using XPI common-rail injection for improved performance and reduced weight. Next Generation (NTG) R620 models continue with the 16.4L V8, employing SCR-only for Euro 6 compliance and eliminating EGR to optimize fuel efficiency without sacrificing power. The low-rev torque characteristic enables relaxed, efficient cruising and high startability for demanding heavy-haul applications.
Transmission and Driveline Integration
All R620 variants utilize the Scania Opticruise AMT, progressively upgraded to enable two-pedal operation, customizable driving modes (Economy, Standard, Power), and integrated GPS-based Scania Active Prediction (SAP). NTG models introduced the G25 and G33 gearboxes, with aluminium housings, 50% less internal friction, and layshaft brakes for fast, seamless shifts. Up to eight reverse gears are available on recent gearboxes for maneuvering flexibility. These features enable consistent low-RPM running and momentum maintenance under varying topographies and load conditions.
Chassis, Axle, and Suspension Options
The R620 is available in a wide range of configurations, including 4x2, 6x2, 6x4, and up to 8x4 for specialized heavy-haul or vocational use. Suspension choices include parabolic leaf or full air suspension, with liftable and steerable tag or pusher axles. Hub reduction rear axles are offered for extreme-duty off-road or high-GCW sectors. The modular chassis system enables precise customization for construction, timber, mining, and long-haul operations.
Cabin Variants and Operator Environment
PGR R620s are offered with Highline (CR19H) and Topline (CR19T) sleeper cabs, providing up to 2,200mm standing height. NTG R620s utilize the new CR20N and CR20H cabs, with up to 2,070mm interior height and enhanced crash structure. NTG models feature improved ergonomics, a driver-focused dashboard, premium interior materials, advanced climate control, integrated refrigerator/freezer, and side curtain airbags. All variants are engineered around long-term driver comfort and operational productivity.
