Engine and Driveline

The Scania R650 is powered by the DC16 16.4L V8 diesel engine, delivering 650 hp at 1900 rpm and 3300 Nm from 950–1350 rpm. Engine architecture features a 90° V8 with a bore/stroke of 130 mm/154 mm, wet cylinder liners, and individual four-valve heads. The R650 adopts an SCR-only aftertreatment system, forgoing EGR, enabling a robust, fixed-geometry twin-scroll turbocharger. Efficiency is enhanced by electronically controlled ancillaries, including a viscous fan, oil pump, coolant pump, and a clutch-driven air compressor. Fuel injection uses XPI common-rail technology. Post-2020 models may feature the uprated 660 hp variant while retaining the same torque plateau.

Transmission and Chassis

Standard transmission is the Scania Opticruise AMT, initially with the GRSO925R 12-speed (with 2 crawlers), then upgraded to the G33CM from 2020. The G33CM offers a 14-gear spread, super crawler, up to 8 reverse gears, reduced internal losses, and 75 kg lower weight due to its cast aluminum housing. Performance modes, “Clutch on Demand,” and extended oil change intervals are available. Modular axle configurations include 4x2, 6x2, 6x4 tractor, and rigid 6x2, 8x4, 8x4x4 options. Suspension choices cover full air (B-type), leaf-air (A-type), and all-leaf (Z-type). Wide final drive ratios—including 2.71, 2.92, up to 5.57—match varied operational demands. EBS with ABS, TC, and hill-hold are standard; the optional R4700D retarder (up to 4700 Nm) provides extensive auxiliary braking.

Cabin Comfort and Safety

The R-series cab is available as day or sleeper configurations with low, normal, or Highline roofs (up to ~3,790 mm cab height), tailored for long-haul or specialist roles. Premium features include a highly adjustable seat (often black leather on V8s), extensive storage, integrated refrigerator/freezer, and extendable bunk widths. The digital cluster is paired with a 7” touchscreen infotainment unit, trip data, and Scania Driver Support feedback. Advanced safety systems are standard: ACC, AEB, LDW, ESP, and unique side curtain airbags. Aerodynamic design and LED lighting enhance both efficiency and visibility.
