Used Scania R730 Specifications Overview

Powertrain and Engine Technology

The Scania R730 is powered by the DC16 V8 engine, featuring a 16.4L displacement and a maximum output of 537 kW (730 hp) with 3,500 Nm torque accessible from 1,000 to 1,400 rpm. The engine employs a Compacted Graphite Iron (CGI) block for increased strength and fatigue resistance. The R730 introduced Scania’s XPI (Extra High-Pressure Injection) common-rail system, delivering up to 2,400 bar injection pressure, enabling precise multi-stage injection events for noise and emissions control. Euro 5 variants (2010–2013, DC16 21) use VGT turbocharging and SCR exclusively, while Euro 6 models (2014–2019, DC16 108) implement a hybrid EGR+SCR system, retaining EGR for NOx management due to high fuel throughput. The lower compression ratio (17.4:1) compared to other V8s supports extreme boost pressures for high power density.

Transmission, Driveline, and Axles

The R730 is typically paired with the GRSO925R 12-speed range-splitter automated transmission, featuring overdrive and two crawler gears. Post-2013 models use two-pedal Opticruise with Active Prediction, enabling topographical gear holding for efficiency and heavy haulage software with rapid shift routines. Braking is aided by the R4100D retarder, offering 4,100 Nm retardation and a disengageable (freewheeling) function for reduced losses. Standard 4x2 configurations employ R780 single-reduction axles; heavy-duty 6x4 and 8x4 variants utilize hub reduction axles (RBP835/AD400SAP) to withstand high torque under extreme GCMs (up to 150 tonnes).

Cab Variants and Special Editions

The R730 transitioned from the PGR-series (2010–2016) to NTG (Next Generation, 2016–2019), with key differences in cab height, internal floor design (engine tunnel in R-cab, flat floor in S-cab), and suitability for vocational versus long-haul use. Notable limited editions include the R730 Black Amber (100 units) with bespoke finishes and the R730 Blue Stream (200 units), featuring heritage paintwork and enhanced interiors.

Operational Durability and Maintenance Insights

In extreme-duty applications, such as mining with GCMs exceeding 135 tonnes, the R730’s driveline endures high stress—mandating hub reduction axles and larger tires for traction and durability. Common operational concerns are XPI injector sensitivity to fuel contamination, electronic actuator failures on the VGT turbo, and wiring loom corrosion. For Euro 6 units, elevated AdBlue consumption (approx. 6%) is notable under heavy loads. Despite its complexity, the R730 is valued for its distinctive torque plateau and robust performance in the most demanding environments.
