Used Scania S540 Specifications Overview

Powertrain and Performance

The Scania S540 is powered by the DC13 166, a 12.7L inline-six engine rated at 540 hp and delivering V8-level torque while remaining approximately 300 kg lighter than the V8 alternative. The DC13 166 features a Fixed Geometry Turbocharger (FGT) with ball bearings, delivering faster transient response and improved durability under high thermal loads. The engine operates on a SCR-only aftertreatment strategy, omitting EGR to maximize thermal efficiency and simplify maintenance. XPI fuel injection operates at up to 2,400 bar for precise multi-event injection, optimizing combustion and minimizing soot.

Transmission and Driveline

Early S540 models (2019–2020) used the proven GRS905R 12+2 AMT, while units from late 2020 onwards are equipped with the G33CM gearbox. The G33CM employs three shaft brakes, allowing for rapid, precise shifts without synchromesh rings, maintaining turbo boost and minimizing shift losses. Rear axle options include single-reduction R756 units with ratios as low as 1.95:1, enabling low engine revs (1,000–1,100 rpm) at cruise speed and contributing over 1% fuel savings. The S540 supports 100% HVO and B100 use with applicable engine adaptations.

Cab Design and Driver Environment

The S-series cab provides a completely flat floor, four-step entry, and four-point air suspension for superior driver comfort. The S-Highline cab delivers over 2 meters of interior height, configurable with dual bunks, large overhead lockers, pull-out fridge/freezer, and advanced seat options (including a rotating passenger seat). Driver visibility is enhanced by repositioned seating, reduced A-pillar width, and lowered dash.

Digital Systems and Model Evolution

2019–2023 S540s feature analog/digital hybrid clusters and 5”/7” infotainment screens. From 2024, the Smart Dash digital cockpit brings a fully digital driver display, HD touchscreen (up to 12.9”), and OTA update-ready, 5G-compatible electronics. Reliability upgrades and new cab electronics have reduced common issues seen in earlier years, such as turbo bearing sensitivity to oil quality and cab suspension bush wear. The S540’s modular platform was phased out in favor of the "Super" series post-2022, highlighted by the S560 with further improved BTE.
