Powertrain and Transmission

The Volvo FE320 is powered by a 7.7L D8K inline-6 diesel engine (Euro 6), delivering 320 hp (235 kW) and 1200 Nm torque across a broad 1050–1600 rpm band. Earlier models (2010–2013) used the Deutz-based 7.2L D7E/D7F engine with identical outputs but less responsive torque delivery. In addition to diesel, the FE320 is offered with a 9.0L G9K spark-ignition engine (CNG/biogas), producing the same 320 hp and a higher torque of 1356 Nm, specifically paired with a 6-speed Allison automatic. The key transmission is Volvo’s 12-speed I-Shift AMT, available from 2013 onward, optimized for smooth power delivery and economy. Earlier variants featured either ZF 9-speed manual or Allison full-automatic options.

Chassis, Axle Configurations, and Cab Options

The FE320 can be configured as 4x2, 6x2 (with steered or fixed tag axle), or 6x4 rigid and as a tractor up to 44 t GCW; GVW ranges from 18 to 27 t. Suspension options include full air (with adjustable ride height) or combinations of front parabolic leaf and rear air. The modular chassis facilitates easy body installation, wide PTO choices (including electric PTO for electrified models), and component repositioning flexibility. Four cab types are available: Day Cab, Comfort Cab, Sleeper Cab (full bunk, extended storage), and Low-Entry Cab (flat floor, ultra-low entry, crew seating up to four), catering to distinct operational needs.

Safety, Technology, and Alternative Drivetrains

Recent FE320 models feature ESC, advanced EBS, Adaptive Cruise Control, speed limiter, and a comprehensive ADAS suite. The FE320 Electric now offers dual e-motors, a 2-speed gearbox, and battery capacity supporting up to 275 km range with AC charging up to 43 kW. Both the diesel D8K and CNG G9K powertrains support alternative fuels (HVO, B100). Volvo’s Low-Entry Cab and extensive vision enhancements provide a unique safety advantage for dense urban operation.
