Used Volvo FH400 Specifications Overview
Powertrain and Engine Architecture
The Volvo FH 400 utilizes the 12.8L D13A or D13C inline-six diesel engine, delivering 400 hp and 2000 Nm torque. Designed for operational efficiency in the 40-tonne GCW category, the D13 features a single-piece cylinder head for increased torsional stiffness and a rear-mounted timing gear train for reduced vibration and noise. The EUI (Electronic Unit Injector) system operates at pressures up to 2400 bar, overseen by an advanced EMS with pilot injection for improved combustion and noise reduction. The torque curve is engineered for downspeeding, providing maximum torque from 1050 rpm and allowing efficient high-gear operation. Emission control relies on SCR, without the EGR and DPF complexity of later Euro 6 models, yielding mechanical simplicity and high reliability.
Transmission and Driveline Options
All FH 400 models from 2010 onward are equipped with the I-Shift AT2412 automated manual transmission (12-speed, 2400 Nm), eliminating synchronizers and optimizing shift logic via electronic control for smoother operation and reduced internal friction. Efficiency features include Eco-Roll (I-Roll), enabling engine idle while coasting on gradients, and adaptive shift logic based on vehicle load and road slope.
Chassis and Suspension Configurations
The chassis is built from high-tensile steel with a modular hole pattern for flexible body mounting. Standard axles are 4x2 (fleet long haul), with 6x2 variants (liftable/pusher/tag axle) and 6x4 options (T-Ride bogie) for higher payload and rough terrain. Most FH 400s offer ECS-managed full air suspension (4-bellows) with remote kneeling and height control; independent front suspension (IFS) is optional on later models for improved ride and steering precision.
Cab Design and Safety Features
FH 400 trucks feature Version 3 ("Classic") cabs with raked windscreen, available in Sleeper, Globetrotter, and Globetrotter XL formats (up to 210 cm standing height). Version 4 cabs introduce a more upright windscreen, larger interior space, and improved all-round visibility. Passive safety includes a high-strength steel safety cage and FUP; active systems include ACC, LKS, and DAS. The integrated VEB+ engine brake delivers up to 375 kW retarding power for enhanced downhill control without reliance on service brakes.
