Engine and Drivetrain

Volvo FH480 is powered by a 12.8L inline-six D13 engine, with Euro 5 models using the D13C (480 hp/2400 Nm) and Euro 6 variants using the D13K. The Euro 6 D13K I-Save version features Turbo Compound (D13TC) technology, delivering 480 hp and up to 2700 Nm of torque available across a broad rev range (900–1250 rpm) for enhanced fuel efficiency and drivability. Advanced Common Rail injection, rear-mounted timing gears, and low-friction wave pistons further improve performance and reduce operating costs.

All models are equipped with Volvo’s 12-speed I-Shift AMT, with options including Dual Clutch for uninterrupted power and crawler gears for startability under high gross combination weights (up to 325 tonnes). I-See predictive cruise integrates GPS topography data for real-time fuel optimization. Rear axles are offered with single reduction hypoid or hub reduction options to tailor GCW and torque requirements.

Chassis, Axles, and Suspension

Axle configurations include 4x2, 6x2 (mid-lift/tag lift), and 6x4. Front axles support up to 9 tonnes, while rear bogies accommodate up to 26 tonnes. The Tandem Axle Lift feature allows turning a 6x4 into a 4x2 on suitable terrain, reducing fuel and tire wear. Suspension systems are available as full air, parabolic leaf, or mixed air/leaf spring setups. Liftable and steerable axles further broaden application flexibility.

Cab Variants and Interior

Available cabs include Sleeper, Globetrotter, and Globetrotter XL, with internal standing heights from 171 cm (Sleeper) to 220 cm (Globetrotter XL) and lower bunks up to 81.5 cm wide. Post-2020 models feature a digital 12" main instrument display and 9" infotainment/camera touchscreen. Options include I-Park Cool climate, air suspension, premium sound, built-in refrigerator or microwave, and extensive storage.

Safety and Assistance Technology

Key systems include EBS, FUPS, SRS airbag, ESP, and VDS. Advanced ADAS options are Lane Departure Warning, Adaptive Cruise Control, Collision Warning with Emergency Brake, Lane Keeping Assist, and up to eight integrated external cameras. The optional Camera Monitoring System replaces mirrors for improved aerodynamics and visibility.
