Powertrain and Driveline

Volvo FH500 is powered by a 12.8L D13K inline-six diesel engine rated at 500 hp (368 kW) and 2500 Nm torque for the base variant, or up to 2800 Nm at 900 rpm in the I-Save Turbo Compound (TC) version. I-Save models feature turbo compounding for greater low-end torque and reduced fuel consumption, integrated with I-See predictive cruise control for topographical fuel optimization. All FH500 units employ the I-Shift 12-speed AMT; specialized options include I-Shift Dual Clutch for uninterrupted power delivery, and I-Shift with Crawler Gears enabling starts under loads up to 325 tonnes GCW and low-speed maneuvering at 0.5 km/h. The FH500 supports multi-fuel configurations, with LNG and biogas models offering equivalent power and lower CO2 output.

Chassis and Cab Configurations

Chassis flexibility includes available 4x2, 6x2, and 6x4 layouts. Suspension choices span full air, parabolic, or multi-leaf. Front axles are rated up to 10 tonnes; rear bogies, up to 26 tonnes, with liftable and steerable axles optional. Cab variants range from standard Sleeper to Globetrotter, Globetrotter XL (220 cm standing height, wide lower bunk), and Globetrotter XXL (longest, widest lower bunk at 2130 mm). The cab structure uses high-tensile steel, tested to leading global impact standards.

Driver Environment and Safety

Post-2020 FH500 models feature a customizable 12" digital instrument cluster with an optional 9" side display for infotainment, navigation, and camera feeds. Volvo Dynamic Steering (VDS) actively assists, reducing steering effort and counteracting crosswinds; Adaptive Cruise Control operates down to standstill. Integrated Blind Spot Camera, Road Sign Recognition, and Collision Warning with Emergency Brake are available. Telematics and remote monitoring via Volvo Connect enable predictive maintenance and fleet management.
