Powertrain and Transmission

The Volvo FH16 700 features a 16.1L D16G (Euro 5, 2010–2012) or a 17.3L D17 (Euro 6, 2024–present) inline-six diesel engine, both delivering 700 hp. Maximum torque ranges from 3150 Nm (D16G) to 3400 Nm (D17) across a broad low-rev band. The D16G utilizes Electronic Unit Injector (EUI) technology with SCR aftertreatment, while the D17 employs Common Rail injection, a patented wave piston crown, and supports 100% HVO biofuel operation. Transmission is always Volvo’s I-Shift 12-speed AMT, with optional crawler gears providing ultra-low ratios for startability at GCWs up to 325 tonnes and crawl speeds below 1 km/h.

Cab Variants and Ergonomics

Cab options include Sleeper, Globetrotter, XL, and XXL. The Globetrotter XL provides up to 220 cm standing height; the XXL offers a wider, longer lower bunk for extended living comfort. All variants feature a neck-tilt adjustable steering wheel, integrated I-Shift gear selector, and, from 2020, a fully digital instrument panel with a 12" display and configurable 9" side touch screen for infotainment and camera views.

Chassis, Axles, and Configuration

Tractor and rigid chassis are available in 4x2, 6x2, 6x4, 8x4, and 10x4 setups. Axle choices range from on-highway single reduction (e.g., RTS2370A) for long-haul efficiency to heavy-duty hub reduction (e.g., RTH3815) for off-road or 325-tonne applications. Available suspension includes full air, full leaf, or mixed front/rear. Tandem Axle Lift is optionally available on double-drive tractors for reduced fuel consumption when unladen.

Advanced Features and Safety Systems

Distinctive FH technologies include Volvo Dynamic Steering (VDS) for low-effort, high-stability steering and active assistance. FH Aero variants (2024–) feature a 24 cm extended cab, aerodynamic bodywork, and Camera Monitor System replacing mirrors for reduced drag and improved visibility. Standard and optional systems include I-See predictive cruise, Collision Warning with Emergency Brake, Adaptive Cruise Control (with Stop & Go), Lane Keeping Assist, and multi-stage active safety integration with VDS.
