Powertrain and Transmission

The Volvo FL 210, in its post-2013 form, is driven by Volvo’s in-house D5K210 engine—a 5.1L four-cylinder common rail diesel equipped with a VGT for optimal low-rev response and a flat torque curve, delivering 210 hp and 800 Nm. Available transmissions include the I-Sync 6-speed automated manual (model ATO1056) with overdrive top gear for regional efficiency, and an 8-speed fully automatic (8AP1200) supporting configurable drive modes. The modern D5K unit’s compact design enables a 12-tonne variant with up to 500 kg lighter chassis than previous 6-cylinder models, improving payload and urban maneuverability.

Variants, Chassis, and Suspension

The FL 210 is chiefly specified as a 12-tonne GVW model with 4x2 axle configuration, front axle rating up to 4,500 kg, and rear axle up to 8,500 kg. The 4x4 variant, introduced in 2015, features a raised chassis and full-time four-wheel drive with dual-range transfer case for use in demanding terrains and municipal applications. Operators can select from multiple wheelbase lengths, supporting body flexibility for distribution, waste, or recovery missions. Suspension choices include standard parabolic leaf springs or full air suspension for adjustable ride height and enhanced cargo protection.

Cab and Safety Systems

The FL series offers Day Cab, Short Sleeper (Comfort), and Crew Cab (up to 7 seats), with options for extra passenger door windows to reduce blind spots. Driver ergonomics benefit from low-entry steps, integrated headrest/seating, and noise-dampened cabins. Key active safety systems include ESP, AEBS (radar-based collision mitigation), and Lane Keeping Support, with reinforced cabs exceeding Swedish crash standards and passive safety features like FUP/SUP for enhanced urban protection.

Electric Variant and Advanced Features

The FL Electric expands the FL 210’s portfolio with continuous power up to 135 kW, battery packs (280–565 kWh), and a range up to 450 km for zero-emission city logistics. Advanced options include connected telematics for predictive maintenance, multi-mode transmissions, and purpose-built drive mode packages for specialized rescue or delivery operations.
