The Volvo FL 250 (2010–2024) is defined by its medium-duty, urban-focused design and agile 2.3m-wide cab. The early FL 250 models utilize a 7.2L D7E inline-six common-rail diesel (Euro 5), delivering approx. 250 hp and 920 Nm; post-May 2013 variants feature Volvo’s in-house D8K250, a 7.7L, 6-cylinder diesel (Euro 6), officially rated at 250 hp (184–188 kW) and 950 Nm from 900–1700 rpm. Transmission options include ZF 6- and 9-speed manual gearboxes or, for optimized city operation, the 6-speed I-Sync AMT (ATO1056) or Allison 6-speed full automatics. Recent updates offer an 8-speed automatic with programmable drive modes.

Chassis, Configurations, and Capacities

Standard layout is 4x2; a factory 4x4 chassis is available for utility and off-road roles. GVW options range from 12 to 18 tonnes, with GCW ratings up to 32 tonnes for drawbar operation. A typical 18t 4x2 variant features a 7.1t front and 11.5t rear axle (RS1132A, single reduction), with driver-controlled differential lock standard. Suspension systems include front parabolic leaf springs and optional rear air suspension (2-bag) for ride comfort and adjustable chassis height.

Cab Variants and Features

Cab options comprise Day Cab (city logistics), Comfort Cab (extra storage/fold-up bunk), and four-door Crew Cab (up to 7 occupants), all at 2.1m width. Ergonomics focus on easy entry, air-suspended seats, adaptable steering, and configurable storage. Upgrades include DAB/Bluetooth infotainment and air conditioning.

Safety and Versatility

FL 250 is equipped with EBS disc brakes, ESP, AEBS, FCW, LKA, and specialized urban aids like Front Short Range Assist and Side Collision Avoidance Support (post-2023). Modular chassis, multiple wheelbases, extensive factory PTO options (up to 600 Nm), and electric-ready architecture enable deployment as distribution truck, tipper, refuse collector, or fire appliance.
