The Volvo FL290 is powered by the D7F290 engine, an inline six-cylinder 7.2L diesel unit generating 290 hp and 1070 Nm of torque across 1200–1700 rpm. Its pushrod-valvetrain design enables a low cab height and flat torque curve, optimizing driveability for urban and regional distribution tasks. Torque is managed through either a standard exhaust brake or an optional compression brake, reducing service brake wear. For Euro 5 applications, SCR aftertreatment is used without a DPF, making the FL290 suitable for heavy-duty stop-start cycles and secondary markets with less stringent emission requirements.
Transmission and Driveline Options
The FL290 features manual (6-speed ZTO1006, 9-speed ZTO1109) and automated transmissions. The I-Sync (ATO1056), an automated manual, offers efficiency benefits for urban and regional work, while the Allison AL306 torque-converter automatic is available for severe-duty and municipal applications, providing uninterrupted power delivery and enhanced startability. Later FL variants (Euro 6 D8K engines) introduce the ZF PowerLine 8-speed automatic, delivering skip-shift functionality and rapid torque converter lock-up, thus improving low-speed control and highway fuel economy.
Chassis Configurations and Suspension Systems
The FL chassis supports 12–18 t GVW with multiple frame heights (low to XX-high). City chassis utilize 17.5" wheels for reduced deck height, while 16-18 t variants employ 22.5" wheels and heavy-duty axles rated up to 11.5 t. Wheelbases range from 3350–6000+ mm, adaptable via a modular chassis. Suspension options cover rear air suspension with ECS for variable ride height or parabolic leaf springs on construction/4x4 models. The FL 4x4 variant boasts high ground clearance, single-mounted tires, and a dual-range transfer case for 60% gradeability.
Cab, Digital Interface, and Active Safety
The 2100 mm wide FL cab is available in Day, Comfort, or Crew (up to 7 seats) layouts, facilitating tight urban access. Driver ergonomics include low cab entry (two-step), 90-degree doors, pneumatically adjustable steering, and advanced seat suspension. The latest models incorporate a 12" digital instrument cluster, 9" side display with camera integration, and traffic sign recognition.
