Powertrain and Transmission

The Volvo FM330 features the 330 hp variant of the D11 engine, a 10.8L inline-six with SOHC, four valves per cylinder, and a wide, flat torque band offering 1600 Nm from 950–1400 rpm. Early Euro 5 units employ electronically controlled unit injectors, while later Euro 6 models utilize a high-pressure common rail system (up to 2400 bar) for improved combustion efficiency and noise reduction. The standard I-Shift 12-speed AMT manages clutch actuation and gear shifts via ECU logic, analyzing load, gradients, and torque demand. I-See predictive cruise is available, using GPS data for adaptive gear selection, and optional crawler gears support high GCW applications up to 325 tonnes.

Chassis, Suspension, and Axle Options

The FM330 is configured primarily as a 4x2 or 6x2 tractor or rigid, supporting 18-tonne GVW and GCW up to 44 tonnes for drawbar operations. Front axles are rated 7.5–8 tonnes; drive axles feature single-reduction design and driver-controlled diff lock. Suspension choices include parabolic leaf or full air; ECAS allows chassis height adjustment from the cab. Volvo’s rear air suspension includes a patented forward-mounted stabiliser bar for enhanced trailer stability. Liftable/tag axles and rear bogie loads to 19 tonnes are available.

Cab and Driver Environment

Cab variants include Day, Sleeper, and Globetrotter Cabs. Post-2020 cabs offer up to 1 m³ extra space and enhanced visibility through larger windows and a lowered door line. Interior highlights include an I-Shift selector, ergonomic refinement, higher-raised lower bunk (in Sleepers), underbunk storage, and a 12" digital instrument cluster plus optional 9" display for infotainment and camera feeds.

Signature Features and Safety

Volvo Dynamic Steering (VDS) is standard from the 2013 facelift, reducing low-speed steering effort and filtering out high-speed disturbances. EBS forms the basis for integrated safety systems, enabling Lane Keeping Assist and Collision Warning with Emergency Brake. Adaptive Cruise Control is functional down to 0 km/h. Optional equipment includes multi-camera systems and Blind Spot Detection for improved operational safety.
