Powertrain and Transmission
The Volvo FM370 is powered by the 10.8L D11 engine, consistently delivering 370 hp and up to 1800 Nm of torque (D11K, Euro 6; 1750-1770 Nm for D11C and D11A variants). The D11K uses high-pressure common rail injection and a compact aftertreatment one-box, while older D11C and export D11A versions utilize unit injectors. The VEB engine brake is available, rated up to 290 kW (D11C) and 270 kW (D11K), supporting brake management in demanding applications. The I-Shift 12-speed automated manual transmission is standard from 2013 onward, available with specialized software for particular tasks and optional crawler gears, allowing precise maneuvering under heavy loads.
Chassis and Axle Flexibility
The FM370 is configured for a wide operational spectrum with multiple axle layouts including 4x2 tractors, 6x2 rigids, and heavy-duty 6x4 and 8x4 tippers. Rear axle options span the RSS single reduction for highway efficiency and RTH hub reduction for off-road applications. Tandem Axle Lift is optional, improving efficiency by lifting an unladen drive axle. Suspension choices include leaf spring or full air suspension, the latter offering adjustable ride height and enhanced cargo protection.
Cab and Driver Environment
Cab options include Day, Sleeper (with a 70x200 cm bunk), and Globetrotter (up to 201 cm interior height), plus Low and Crew variants for specialist tasks. The 2013 redesign introduced an ergonomic, driver-centric cabin with improved sound insulation, optimized dashboard layout, and steering wheel neck-tilt. From 2021, a 12-inch digital display and optional 9-inch side screen provide advanced instrumentation, infotainment, and camera integration.
Key Technologies and Safety
Volvo Dynamic Steering (VDS), available since 2013, reduces steering effort by up to 85% and improves directional stability. The electronic brake system (EBS) foundation includes advanced features, with optional ESC for enhanced stability under challenging conditions.
