Powertrain and Transmission

The Volvo FM450 is driven by the 10.8L D11K six-cylinder engine, generating 450 hp (332 kW) at 1600–1900 rpm and 2150 Nm torque across 1000–1400 rpm. The D11K uses high-pressure common rail injection up to 2400 bar and is engineered with a rear-mounted timing mechanism for reduced vibration and improved cooling. The D13K engine is available in select markets, offering higher torque and compatibility with VEB+ (up to 375 kW) for enhanced engine braking. The FM450 is equipped solely with the 12-speed I-Shift AMT (AT2612F), featuring advanced shift logic. Variants include I-Shift Dual Clutch for uninterrupted torque delivery and I-Shift with Crawler Gears, enabling movement at 0.5 km/h and startability with GCWs up to 325 tonnes.

Chassis, Configurations, and Cab

Highly modular, the FM450 supports configurations from 4x2 and 6x2 tractors for distribution to 8x4 rigids with rear bogie loads up to 38 tonnes for construction. Technology and Safety

FM450 democratizes flagship tech from the FH range. Volvo Dynamic Steering (VDS) is standard, reducing steering effort, counteracting sidewinds, and assisting during blowouts. Predictive cruise control (I-See) uses GPS-linked topographical data to optimize gear changes and fuel consumption, enabling I-Roll for fuel-free coasting. The EBS platform enables advanced ADAS: Collision Warning with Emergency Brake, ESC, and ACC to 0 km/h. Optional systems include Front Short Range Assist, Door Opening Warning, and Side Collision Avoidance Support.

Applications and Alternative Drivelines
