Euro 5 models (2010–2012) use the D13C engine with electronic unit injectors, while Euro 6 models feature the D13K with advanced common-rail injection. The I-Shift 12-speed automated manual transmission is standard, optimized by software for predictive shifting and available with specialized variants such as crawler gears or dual clutch. I-See predictive cruise control and Eco-Roll enable fuel efficiency gains, leveraging GPS and topographical data for optimal gear and speed management.

Cab Design and Driver Environment

Third-generation models (from 2020) offer a redesigned cab with up to one extra cubic meter of space, enhanced direct vision, and a raised bed. A fully digital 12" instrument display and optional 9" side touchscreen modernize control and infotainment. Options range from Day Cab to Sleeper and Low Entry layouts, with customizable storage solutions and reinforced insulation for noise and temperature control. Ergonomic advancements include a slimmer I-Shift selector and improved seating.

Chassis Configurations and Adaptability

The FM460 is available in multiple axle configurations—6x2 tractors with liftable axles, 6x4 or 8x4 for construction, and 8x2 rigids focused on high-payload, paved-road work. Chassis are prepared for specialist bodywork with pre-drilled mounting points and customizable interfaces, supporting disciplined applications like tippers, mixers, cranes, or tankers.

Signature Technologies and Safety Features

Standout technology includes Volvo Dynamic Steering (VDS) for reduced steering effort and improved stability. EBS with updated ACC (down to 0 km/h), side collision avoidance, door opening warning, and front short-range assist are built into the ADAS suite.
