Powertrain and Driveline

The Volvo FM 500 is powered by the 12.8L D13K Euro 6 diesel engine, delivering 500 hp and 2500 Nm torque (peak from 980–1400 rpm, depending on variant). The engine uses common rail injection and features a rear-mounted timing gear for improved weight distribution. An optional Volvo Engine Brake+ (VEB+) offers up to 375 kW (510 hp) of braking power. The FM 500 is exclusively paired with the I-Shift automated manual gearbox; configurations for construction include crawler gears and tailored software for off-road traction. Alternative powertrains are available: the G13C LNG engine provides 500 hp/2500 Nm with a range up to 1000 km, while the FM Electric delivers up to 490 kW via a 540 kWh battery for zero-exhaust regional operations.

Cab, Chassis, and Ergonomics

A key distinction is the FM’s lower, more accessible cab, offered in Day, Sleeper, and Globetrotter variants. The third-generation cab (from 2020) provides up to 10% improved direct visibility, ergonomic seating, a fully digital 12" instrument cluster, and a 9" touchscreen side display. Cab innovations include a Camera Monitor System (optional from 2024) replacing glass mirrors for aerodynamic and safety advantages, as well as USB-C charging and an integrated microwave.

Axle Configurations and Applications

Standard and optional chassis layouts include 4x2, 6x2, 6x4, and 8x4, supporting GVWs up to 35,500 kg and GCWs up to 120,000 kg. Tag and pusher axles, liftable/steerable options, and axle lifts for improved empty running efficiency are available. Suspension choices cover full air, parabolic, or multi-leaf. Hub reduction axles and the Body Builder Module are suited for heavy-duty and construction applications.

Digital and Connected Features

Digital advancements include the I-See predictive cruise, ADAS, Volvo Dynamic Steering (VDS), a cloud-connected dashboard, and remote diagnostics. Integrated telematics and predictive maintenance programs enhance uptime and operational efficiency, reinforcing the FM 500’s adaptability for mixed hauling, regional, and construction roles.
