Used Volvo FM540 Specifications Overview

Powertrain and Transmission

The Volvo FM540 is powered by a 12.8L D13 engine, delivering 540 hp and 2600 Nm of torque. Early models (2010–2013) feature the D13C engine with EUI, while 2014–2020 models use the D13K with Common Rail injection and rear timing gear. The D13K supports a 1000 Nm rear PTO for demanding auxiliary applications. Peak torque is available from 1000–1450 rpm, enabling efficient downspeeding under heavy loads. Transmission options include the I-Shift 12-speed AMT, I-Shift Dual Clutch (allowing gear changes with zero torque interruption), and optional Crawler Gears for starting with GCW up to 325 tonnes.

Cab Architecture and Ergonomics

The FM540 offers multiple cab variants: Sleeper, Globetrotter, and Low Sleeper Cab (LSLP). Post-2013 models feature upright A-pillars and a flat windscreen, yielding up to one cubic meter more interior space and improved driver comfort. Enhanced visibility is provided by lowered door lines and slim mirror housings. The digital driver environment is anchored by a high-resolution configurable instrument display (12" in late models) and an adjustable steering wheel with neck-tilt. Entry remains low-profile, requiring minimal steps for frequent ingress/egress.

Chassis, Configurations, and Axle Technology

The FM540 is available in a broad range of configurations: 4x2, 6x2, 6x4, 8x2, 8x4, and Tridem (8x4 with steered tag axle). Chassis height options include High, Medium, Low, and X-Low—enabling internal cargo heights up to 3m within the 4m EU limit, crucial for car carriers. Tandem Axle Lift (2015+) allows 6x4 and 8x4 trucks to raise a drive axle when unladen, improving fuel efficiency and maneuverability. The 8x4 Tridem setup is optimized for tight turning in construction or agricultural settings.

Advanced Handling and Safety Systems

Volvo Dynamic Steering (VDS), introduced in 2013, provides electronically assisted steering with torque overlay, reverse centering, and compensation for road disturbances, enhancing low-speed control and high-speed stability. Safety features on the FM540 include CW-EB, ACC, EBS, ESC, and a reinforced cab structure certified to Swedish BOF10 standards. The Globetrotter cab variant includes a roof escape hatch for emergency situations.
