Engine and Driveline

The Volvo FMX330 is equipped with the D11 inline six-cylinder, 10.8L diesel engine, producing 330 hp (243-246 kW) and 1600 Nm of peak torque. Across its evolution, the D11 moved from unit injector (D11C, Euro 5) to high-pressure common rail (D11K, Euro 6), achieving broad torque delivery between 950–1400 rpm. The D11K integrates precision fuel management and advanced piston design for improved efficiency and lower noise. Driveline options include Volvo’s I-Shift automated manual transmission, available with crawler gears for sub-2 km/h precise maneuvering and high-load startability, as well as an optional I-Shift Dual Clutch for seamless torque delivery on uneven terrain. Configuration-specific transmission software offers construction-oriented modes, rock-free functions, and rapid direction change.

Chassis, Axle and Suspension Configurations

The FMX330 utilizes a modular, high-strength chassis with multiple heights (900–1240 mm) and axle layouts (4x2 to 10x8). Typical use-cases see 6x4, 8x4, or heavy-duty 10x4 configurations. A 38-tonne rear bogie option increases payload. Driven front axles with Automatic Traction Control (ATC) engage automatically under slip, while Tandem Axle Lift disengages the rear drive axle to reduce wear and improve turning when unladen. Suspension options include parabolic/multi-leaf or air systems, with ground clearance up to 300 mm for challenging terrain.

Key Functional Features

Distinctive for construction, the FMX330 features a 3 mm steel bumper, 32-tonne-rated cast iron towing point, high-mounted protected headlamps, and field-replaceable bumper corners. The cab is built from high-strength steel with advanced corrosion protection and maximized visibility via larger glass areas and lowered lines. Volvo Dynamic Steering (VDS) is standard from 2013, providing active steering correction, reducing low-speed effort, and filtering vibrations. The digital cockpit features a configurable 12" main instrument cluster, with an optional 9" side display supporting up to eight external cameras. EBS is standard on all modern models, enabling advanced traction and stability functions.
