Cabin Architecture and Comfort
The Renault Magnum 480 distinguishes itself with its modular cab design, offering a flat floor and interior height exceeding 2 meters. This allows true standing-room freedom and provides a total interior volume of 8.9 m³. The cabin is mounted on a four-point, low-frequency air suspension system that isolates the driver from vibrations. Features include 1,090 liters of storage, a 1,983 x 700 mm bunk with a 140 mm three-zone mattress, and an ETM climate control system. High seating position and panoramic windscreen deliver enhanced road visibility. Options such as an under-bunk fridge and Bluetooth connectivity support long-haul comfort. Late models offer special editions, including “Route 66” and “Magnum Legend,” with exclusive materials and styling.
Powertrain and Transmission
The Magnum 480 employs a Volvo-derived DXi 13 inline-six diesel engine (12,777 cm³) paired with a second-gen high-pressure unit injector system. Output is rated at 353 kW (480 PS) from 1,450–1,900 rpm and 2,400 Nm torque from 1,050–1,400 rpm. Most units comply with Euro 5, with many meeting EEV standards without requiring a DPF. The standard transmission is a 12-speed Optidriver+ AMT (Volvo I-Shift AT2412D), known for its swift, adaptive shifts; a 16-speed ZF manual remains optional. Optibrake engine braking and available hydraulic retarders enhance operational efficiency.
Chassis, Suspension, and Safety Systems
Core chassis options include 4x2, 6x2, and 6x4 tractor units, typically using the P 13170/2 single-reduction drive axle. Suspension comprises parabolic leaf springs at the front, air suspension at the rear, and an advanced cab air-suspension setup. Fuel tank capacity can reach up to 1,455 liters on 4x2 models. The braking system utilizes disc brakes all round, managed by EBS 5 with integrated ABS, ASR, emergency brake assist, hill-start aid, and optional ESP. The Optibrake system supplies up to 414 kW of auxiliary braking power. Total deceleration performance exceeds 7 m/s².
