Powertrain and Driveline Features
The MAN TGS 35.470 is powered by the D26 12.4L inline-six engine, developing 470 hp (346 kW) and 2,400 Nm of torque from 930 to 1,350 rpm. From 2019 onward, Euro 6d/e variants use a simplified single-stage turbocharger, higher 21:1 compression ratio, and a “Soft EGR” strategy, focusing combustion efficiency and shifting NOx reduction to the SCR aftertreatment, resulting in lower fuel consumption and up to 8.2% CO2 reduction compared to previous models. The D26 engine was previously equipped with dual-stage turbos and higher EGR rates, but this changed for improved reliability and operational costs. Mated transmissions are ZF 12-speed AMTs, evolving from AS-Tronic to Traxon. Specialized TipMatic® software, such as OFFROAD, adjusts shift logic, enabling gear holding, rocking mode, and optimized starts for rough terrain. Planetary hub reduction rear axles and inter-axle/cross-axle diff locks deliver maximum traction under heavy load.
Chassis, Suspension, and Traction
The standard chassis is a high-strength S500MC steel ladder frame (270 x 85 mm, 7–8 mm thickness), optimized for payload and ease of body integration. Suspension is typically full parabolic leaf across all axles, while ECAS air suspension is optional on the rear. The 8x4 layout features twin steered front axles (14,200–15,000 kg combined) and tandem planetary hub-reduction rear axles. The HydroDrive® system is an optional hydrostatic, on-demand front-wheel drive solution. With hydraulic motors embedded in the front hubs, HydroDrive® provides switchable all-wheel traction below 28 km/h, delivering up to 750 kg weight savings over mechanical AWD and maintaining standard ride height.
Cabin and Operator Interface
Since 2020, the NTG cab offers a digital cockpit with a 12.3” central display, MAN SmartSelect controller, and relocated gear/park brake controls to maximize floor space and reduce driver fatigue. Entry is optimized via central, stair-like steps and an 89° door opening. Cabs are available in NN (day), TN (long, single bunk), and TM (medium roof, added volume) variants, all at 2,240 mm width. Practical features include EasyControl door panel buttons for exterior-accessible functions and a clear top frame layout for body integration.
Model-Specific Reliability Aspects
Euro 6c (2016–2019) engines are subject to known bearing recall issues; Euro 6d/e engines address prior complexity, increasing reliability. Optional KSM interface supports sophisticated bodybuilder integration without core electronics interference. Propshaft and AdBlue® system issues have been reported in earlier models; hardware updates and recalls addressed most affected units. The combination of robust chassis, modular transmission software, and HydroDrive® traction underlines the TGS 35.470’s suitability for diversified, high-demand vocational roles.
