Mercedes-Benz Arocs 3258 is powered by the OM 473 in-line six-cylinder engine, displacing 15.6L and delivering 580 hp. The engine utilizes X-PULSE common-rail injection (up to 2,700 bar at the injector) and features turbo-compound technology, harnessing exhaust energy for up to 50 kW of additional output. Maximum torque is available from low rpm, supporting demanding construction applications. Standard gearbox is the PowerShift 3 AMT, available in 12- or 16-speed configurations, with adaptive driving programs: Offroad, Rocking, and Power modes. Optional Turbo Retarder Clutch (TRC) enables hydrodynamic starting, wear-free low-speed maneuvering, and retarder braking up to 350 kW. Hydraulic Auxiliary Drive (HAD) is available for temporary front axle traction without the weight or complexity of conventional AWD.
Chassis Configuration and Specialist Variants
The Arocs 3258 is offered primarily in 8x4/4 and Tridem layouts, optimized for 32t GVW. Loader and Grounder chassis variants address different operational requirements: Loader prioritizes payload via lightweight frame (high-tensile steel, aluminum tanks) and wide single tires; Grounder emphasizes durability with 9 mm frame rails, planetary hub reduction axles, and reinforced parabolic springs. Servotwin electro-hydraulic steering is standard, adjusting assistance by speed for improved maneuverability under load. The SLT variant incorporates a rear cooling tower, heavy-duty couplings, and reinforced frame for use as a heavy haulage tractor (GCW up to 250 t).
Cab and Operator Interface
Cab options include S-Cab (ClassicSpace) for site work, M-Cab (ClassicSpace) with extended storage, and L-Cab (StreamSpace/BigSpace) for long-haul use. All cabs utilize galvanized steel panels and staircase-type flex-mounted steps. The 2019 update introduced MirrorCam (digital exterior mirrors) and the Multimedia Cockpit with dual digital displays and integrated body control functions. Accessibility and site ergonomics are optimized for frequent entry/exit and operational visibility.
Advanced Safety and Assistance Systems
Arocs 3258 is equipped with ABA 5/6 (Active Brake Assist), Sideguard Assist with collision avoidance functionality, and Predictive Powertrain Control tuned for rural/inter-urban operation. MirrorCam and Sideguard Assist collectively enhance situational awareness, especially in urban and site environments.
