Used Volvo FM340 Specifications Overview

Powertrain and Engine Development

The Volvo FM340 has transitioned from the 9.4L D9B engine (2010–2013, unit injector, SOHC, 4 valves/cylinder) to the 10.8L D11K platform with common-rail injection (2013–2025). The D11K produces 340 hp, offers superior fuel economy via downspeeding, and is 160–180 kg lighter than a D13, increasing payload potential. Rear-mounted timing gears on the D9B reduce crankshaft torsion and enhance engine compactness. Common-rail (2,400 bar) technology in the D11K allows multiple, precise injection events for improved combustion and lower noise.

Transmission and Driveline Options

All FM340 variants feature Volvo’s I-Shift AMT, including the I-Shift Dual Clutch option (SPO2812) for continuous torque under load, especially beneficial on hilly routes. Vocational versions are available with I-Shift Crawler Gears (up to 32:1) for extra-low speed maneuvering, and the Powertronic auto transmission for high start-stop duty cycles. Axle options include single-reduction RSS1344C for general distribution and hub-reduction RTH2610F for heavier payloads. The Tandem Axle Lift (post-2015) on 6x4 or 8x4 reduces drag and improves turning by disengaging and lifting one drive axle when unladen.

Cab, Chassis, and Driver Interface

The FM340 cab adopts a low-mount, medium-height “Workpod” design prioritizing driver accessibility and direct vision. The 2020 generation increased internal volume by 1 m³ and added a fully digital 12" instrument cluster plus a 9" side display. Enhanced visibility comes from larger glazing and a lower door line, while a passenger door lower window further reduces blind spots for urban work. Ergonomics include a three-way adjustable Neck Tilt steering column and up to 340L of storage in sleeper cabs.

Chassis Configurations and Notable Features

Chassis flexibility includes standard 4x2, 6x2 tag/pusher axle, and 8x2/8x4 tridem configurations, accommodating heavy front-mounted equipment with 10t air-suspended front axles (2020+). Frame heights are typically 300 mm/8 mm, with optional inner liners for heavy-duty applications. Notable are Volvo Dynamic Steering (VDS), providing active torque assistance for precision handling and reduced driver fatigue, and compatibility with advanced digital connectivity and multi-camera safety systems.
