Engine and Drivetrain Technology
The MAN TGX 26.560 is defined by its advanced heavy-duty drivetrains. From 2014 to 2024, it featured the D3876 15.2L inline-six engine (CGI block/head), producing 560 PS (412 kW) and 2,700 Nm from 930 rpm, utilizing two-stage sequential turbocharging, a high-capacity common rail system (up to 2,500 bar), and forged steel pistons for durability under 250 bar pressures. From 2024, the D30 “PowerLion” 13L inline-six (TRATON platform) delivers 560 PS and increased torque to 2,800 Nm, paired with the lighter, 14-speed MAN TipMatic automated transmission with overdrive. All variants prioritize high torque at low rpm for down-speeding and efficiency in long-haul or heavy-load applications.
Chassis, Axles, and Configurations
The TGX 26.560 is available primarily as a 6x2 or 6x4 three-axle tractor. The 6x2 setup includes a liftable, non-driven axle to optimize load distribution and lower tyre wear, supporting GCW up to 44,000 kg. The 6x4 variant, with twin driven axles, is tailored for high-traction or off-road operations. Select markets also offered 4x2 versions (TGX 18.560). Extensive chassis reconfigurations accommodate large aftertreatment units without compromising fuel or AdBlue tank capacity.
Cab Design and Driver Experience
Second-generation models (2010–2020) offer XL, XLX, and XXL cabs, with full flat floors and up to twin bunks. The New Truck Generation (2020–) introduces GN, GM, and GX cabs, with the GX cab exceeding 1,100L integrated storage and advanced full-digital instrument clusters (up to 12.3”). The MAN SmartSelect rotary controller and relocated gear select/park functions enhance ergonomics and free cabin space, distinguishing later models in driver comfort and usability.
Specialized Features and Evolution
The D3876 introduced “top-down” cooling and domed valves for service life. A high-performance Turbo EVB engine brake (up to 600 kW) supports controlled heavy-load descents. Subsequent software, including MAN EfficientCruise and SmartShifting, integrates GPS topography data for predictive gear changes and efficient roll. The D30 PowerLion engine, combined with improved aerodynamics and the 14-speed transmission, targets up to 5% fuel savings over prior models.
