Powertrain and Driveline

The MAN TGX 28.540 is available with two six-cylinder diesel engines: the 12.4L D2676 and the 15.2L D3876. The D2676 delivers high efficiency and lower weight for standard long-haul use, while the D3876 offers 540 hp and 2,700 Nm of torque for performance-focused or heavy-duty applications. The D3876 features third-gen common rail injection (up to 2,500 bar), two-stage turbocharging, and a top-down cooling architecture. Power is managed by the MAN TipMatic 12-speed automated transmission, based on ZF TraXon, offering software programs like FLEET and PROFI for different operational preferences, as well as OFFROAD and DP modes for specialized tasks. SmartShifting, idle speed driving, and load-sensing shifting further optimize drivability and efficiency.

Chassis, Axles, and Suspension

The TGX 28.540 employs a 6x2 axle configuration with a 28-tonne GVW, featuring a steer axle, single driven axle, and liftable/non-driven tag or pusher axle, boosting traction and payload flexibility. Front suspension options include parabolic or single-leaf springs, with full air suspension available for both axles. Premium setups use ECAS for precise load-leveling and ride quality. The liftable third axle reduces tire wear and fuel use when hauling lighter loads.

Cabin and Driver Environment

The 2020-on “GX” cab provides 2,070 mm standing height and over 1,100L storage, with SmartSelect rotary infotainment control and a fully digital dashboard. Ergonomics are enhanced by wide-opening doors, electronic park brake, and increased interior noise insulation. Steering column and gear selector redesigns maximize cross-cab access. Modular storage options include an under-bunk fridge or drawer for flexible living space.

Technological Advancements

Efficiency features include MAN EfficientCruise (predictive GPS-based cruise control), EfficientRoll coasting, and TipMatic Efficiency Plus mode for economy-maximized operation. The ADAS suite incorporates ACC Stop & Go, EBA, LDW/LRA, Turn Assist, Lane Change Support, and semi-automated CruiseAssist and Traffic Jam Assist. Radar and camera-based systems provide active intervention and advanced situational awareness for long-haul safety.
