Powertrain and Performance
MAN TGX 28.560 combines high-output diesel engineering with efficient driveline integration. Earlier models (2014–2023) utilize the D3876 inline-six, 15.2L engine, CGI block construction, producing 560 PS (412 kW) and 2,700 Nm from 930 rpm, with some variants upgraded to 580 PS and 2,900 Nm after 2017. Key features include sequential two-stage turbocharging, third-generation common rail at 2,500 bar, forged steel pistons, top-down cooling, domed valves, fire rings, and EVB engine braking system delivering up to 600 kW of retardation. Starting c.2024, the D30 “PowerLion” 13L engine delivers 560 PS and 2,800 Nm, achieving >50% thermal efficiency, in a lighter, more compact package. Both engines are paired with MAN TipMatic automated gearboxes—early variants use ZF AS-Tronic-based 12-speed units (Speed Shifting, EfficientRoll), post-2017 shift to ZF TraXon 12-speed (SmartShifting), and D30 models feature a new 14-speed TipMatic with overdrive.
Axle Configurations and Chassis
The TGX 28.560 is configured primarily as a 6x2 or 6x4 tractor. The 6x2 offers a steerable, liftable tag axle for reduced tyre wear and flexible load distribution, while 6x4 provides dual driven axles for high-traction, heavy-haul or off-road use. GCW ratings reach 44,000 kg in standard spec, with chassis options accommodating specialist applications. Euro 6 chassis updates yielded revised exhaust layouts, larger aftertreatment units, and increased AdBlue tank capacity (25–80L). Aerodynamic enhancements (wide deflectors, optimized inlets) and repositioned components support cooling and efficiency demands.
Cabin Evolution and Driver Interface
Second-gen models offer XL, XLX, and XXL cabs; all with wide-body (2.44m), flat-floor architecture and premium sleeper accommodations. The 2020 “New Truck Generation” introduced the GN, GM, and GX cab family—GX offering >1,100L storage and maximum interior volume. Driver interface advances include digital instrument clusters (up to 12.3"), MAN SmartSelect rotary controller, electronic park brake, column-mounted gear selector, and extensive ergonomic revisions for space and visibility.
Software and Efficiency Systems
Across its evolution, the TGX 28.560 features MAN EfficientCruise—GPS topography-adaptive cruise control—integrated with automated transmissions. Continuous improvements, including EfficientRoll and predictive gear changes, optimize fuel consumption, exploiting the engine’s high low-end torque for down-speeding and fewer shift events. The latest generation pairs drivetrain and aerodynamic refinements to deliver 4–5% lower fuel use versus predecessors.
