Powertrain and Performance
The MAN TGX 33.640 is powered by the D3876 inline-six engine—a 15.2L unit delivering 640 PS (471 kW) and 3,000 Nm at 900-1,350 rpm. Key features include a two-stage turbocharging system for rapid response and sustained torque, third-generation common rail injection (up to 2,500 bar), and a “top-down” thermal management system to optimize cooling at critical components. Braking is supported by the MAN Turbo EVBec system, providing up to 600 kW of continuous retarder performance for safe speed control under load.
Driveline and Chassis Engineering
Standard configuration is a 6x4 chassis with planetary hub-reduction axles (13T or 16T rating) and reinforced frame. The MAN TipMatic 12-speed automated transmission is paired with specialized software—“HeavyDuty” for high-payload hauling, “Efficiency” for line-haul, and “Offroad” modes. For extreme applications (up to 250T GCW), an optional torque converter clutch (WSK) enables wear-free heavy-load starts, 1.58x torque multiplication, and automatic lockup for direct-drive cruising.
Cab, Ergonomics, and Digitalization
The post-2020 NTG series introduces the GX cab, featuring over 2m standing height and >1,100L storage. The workspace is defined by a fully digital instrument cluster and the MAN SmartSelect controller for tactile menu navigation, with controls separated from information displays. Traditional gear shifters are replaced by a column stalk; access between seats is unrestricted. Pre-2020 XLX/XXL cabs offered a near-flat floor and up to 2,100mm interior height.
Specialized Equipment and ADAS
Power take-off options include gearbox or engine-mounted variants for auxiliary equipment. Digitalization features such as over-the-air software upgrades (MAN Now) and advanced telematics support fleet uptime and predictive maintenance. ADAS options range from ACC, ESP, and LGS to advanced Traffic Jam Assist, EBA with vulnerable road user detection, and radar-based Turn Assist/Lane Change Support.
