Used Volvo FM440 Specifications Overview

Powertrain and Engine Technology

The Volvo FM440 is driven by the D13 engine family, an inline six 12.8L diesel powerplant notable for rear-mounted timing gears to optimize cooling. Key evolutions include the D13A with SCR technology for Euro 4/5, the EGR-based D13B for AdBlue-free markets, and the refined D13C for Euro 5/EEV, delivering 440 hp and 2200 Nm torque. The D13C offers a 3% fuel efficiency gain over its predecessor and significantly reduced idle noise through hydraulic vibration dampers. A hallmark feature is the VEB+ engine brake, absorbing up to 375 kW at 2300 rpm, reducing wear on service brakes.

Transmission and Driveline

The FM440 routinely features the 12-speed I-Shift AMT, using TECU and GECU electronic control units for optimized gear changes. Configurable software packages enable tuning for long-haul (I-Roll cruise) or construction duties (P+ mode). From 2013, the I-See predictive cruise control leverages GPS data for topography-based shift planning, enhancing fuel savings. Manual transmissions remained available but were standard only in select applications.

Chassis, Suspension, and Braking

Available in 4x2, 6x2 (with steerable tag/pusher axles), and 6x4/8x4 for construction, the FM440 chassis employs modular engineering for diverse market needs. The Tandem Axle Lift system on 6x4 and 8x4 variants enables lifting and disengaging the rearmost drive axle, improving fuel efficiency and maneuverability when unladen. Suspension choices include ECS4 air suspension with wireless remote chassis height adjustment and parabolic/multi-leaf springs. EBS integrates ABS, traction control, and Stretch Brake for trailer jack-knife prevention.

Cab Design, Safety, and Technology

FM440 cabs are positioned lower than FH models for superior visibility and easy entry. Model updates in 2010 and 2013 introduced ergonomic dashboards, increased storage, digital instrument clusters, and the My Truck app. The 2020 cab redesign increased internal volume and added a 12” digital display paired with a 9” side touchscreen. Safety highlights include a high-strength steel cab tested to Swedish standards, SRS airbag, FUPS, Volvo Dynamic Steering (VDS) with up to 85% steering assist at low speed, ACC, Lane Keeping Support, Collision Warning with Emergency Brake, and a Passenger Corner Camera for blind spot elimination.
